Weekly Operating Rate of SMM Primary Lead Smelters (August 1, 2025 - August 7, 2025) [SMM Weekly Review of Primary Lead Smelter Operating Rates]

Published: Aug 8, 2025 17:51

This week (August 1-7, 2025), the average operating rate of primary lead smelters in the three provinces rose by 3.5 percentage points WoW, reaching 67.4%.

This week, production activities at medium-to-large smelters in Henan Province resumed, with a slight increase in production, becoming the main driver of production growth. Meanwhile, the operating situation in Yunnan and Hunan provinces remained stable. Specifically, in Hunan Province, a company that had reduced production by half due to routine maintenance is expected to resume normal operations next week, so there was no significant change in the total production of the region this week. In Yunnan Province, despite some plants undergoing maintenance, the overall production situation remained stable, and the companies under maintenance plan to restart their production lines in late August. In addition to the three aforementioned provinces, a smelter in a certain location in North China announced that it would conduct regular maintenance work at the end of August; a company in Central China stated that its crude lead department would enter the routine maintenance stage at the end of Q3, but there were no temporary changes to the production schedule of primary lead; furthermore, a company in east China revealed that it plans to implement a longer-term equipment maintenance in Q4.

Lead prices were in the doldrums, while secondary lead smelters maintained firm offers due to losses. The mainstream spot order ex-factory prices including tax narrowed the discount to the SMM #1 lead average price by 100 yuan/mt, shifting to a premium of 0–25 yuan/mt, with some smelters halting offers and sales.

Pre-holiday stockpiling by downstream enterprises had largely concluded, and a few had already entered the holiday period, completely suspending procurement. Next week, secondary lead smelters will enter a concentrated wave of production halts and holidays, resulting in sluggish trading activity in the spot market. Offers for spot refined lead orders were sparse, with prices moving in line with the market.

The domestic secondary crude lead market experienced sluggish transactions. As of February 6, 2026, the ex-factory tax-exclusive offers for domestic secondary crude lead stood at 15,250-15,400 yuan/mt. Downstream refined lead and alloy smelters gradually entered the holiday period, showing weak stockpiling willingness. Overseas lead ingot suppliers basically halted transactions with China due to poor consumption in the Chinese market, with only some previously concluded shipments maintaining normal in-transit transportation. The trading atmosphere in the secondary crude lead market will continue to weaken next week.
